How The Garden Came About
In early 2010, a couple of mums from the Parish school had an idea of implementing a small vegetable garden in the school grounds to encourage children to question where our food comes from. The idea was very well received by the Acting Principal of the School, and also Father Bob at the church. He suggested that the church could also benefit from a Community garden.
We were very lucky to have TAFE NSW offer our community an 8-week course that taught us how to go about setting up a successful Community Garden based on Permaculture principles. This course gathered together a group of fifteen school parents, teachers and parishioners that are now dedicated to the Garden's establishment. We welcome anyone from the Parish and/or School community who would like to be involved.
Our Vison
Our Vison
We aim to:
- Follow Permaculture principles in the management of the School and Parish Gardens.
- Encourage the spirit of cooperation, consultation, community pride and achievement.
- Foster stewardship through care of the earth, by working with nature to establish an ecologically balanced environment.
- Acquire, share and increase knowledge in the practice of organic gardening.
- Promote community and school involvement in the garden by holding regular events, workshops and working bees.
- Educate and involve families and in particular children, about the benefits of growing, harvesting and preparing locally produced organic food.
- Create awareness of healthy food choices for life while exploring preventative measures relating to childhood obesity, by linking the garden to the school curriculum.
Please come along to our next planning meeting.
